In today’s economic environment people across the nation are in search of their own business. You are reading this because you are looking at a MAACO franchise. This  article is about helping you in your due diligence. MAACO is a quality company and this author’s dad had a truck painted by MAACO and was very happy with the experience. Perhaps you are a professional person that has seen your job at a big corporation evaporate and now you want to go into business for yourself. You may be a professional in your field and have spent years working and now have a nest egg that you know will not last. This is why you want to be in business for yourself. I admire that and as a business owner there are a few things that I want you to consider before you invest 75K and finance the other 95% to join the nearly 500 MAACO franchise centers.

In the corporate world you may have been responsible for many large projects or have been a team leader. However, there may be one thing that you may never have been responsible for-payroll. Payroll is what you will need every week for your employees. I have had employees before and the most difficult part about having them is when there is an error in their work. This will mean that you will have to pay twice for the work and you will only be paid once by the customer. Take a look at one of your corporate pay stubs. What you will see, are the taxes that were taken from your pay. As a small business owner you are solely responsible for these taxes. Even if you outsource your H.R. you may still be liable if that company goes out of business. Social security and other taxes are not too complicated it works basically like this; simply add 30% to your payroll and that should cover it.

When I was in the printing business I became aware of something called the EPA. As a painting franchise owner you will instantly become aware of this agency and the effect it can have on your business. You will be responsible not only for the health of you employees but the area around your facility. There is waste in any business, some of it toxic and with the laws they way they are currently written you could be a sitting target for a lawsuit down the road. Let me
