Teenagers and Motorcycles – Should You Allow It?

Getting a drivers license can be a very exciting time for a teenager, especially he or she is one of the first to get it. For the parents though, the experience isn’t always so youth motorcycle helmet  exciting. If motorcycles are popular in your family, you may also have to deal with the possibility of having your kid shoot for their motorcycle license as well. The question is, should you or shouldn’t you allow your kid to get their motorcycle license at such an early age.

The motorcycle does have one advantage in that they are restricted to the number of passengers that they can have. This isn’t a true advantage though because it does take more skill to ride a motorcycle with a passenger and it is more dangerous. Some may see this as better when compared to having multiple kids in the car with a teenage driver because there is more distraction with the car filled with adolescents. Motorcycles can teach young drivers to be more responsible when driving because of the increased need for attentive driving.

Allowing your child to get their motorcycle license when they turn 16, or whatever the legal driving age is, also has other advantages. For example, motorcycles are much more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption so you’ll be able to save more money because you won’t have to pay as much for gas. Motorcycle insurance typically costs less than car insurance also, so there is another opportunity to save money.

One other factor that you’ll have to consider is how well your teenager is at driving those types of vehicles. Does he or she have experience driving dirt bikes or small motorcycles from their earlier teenage years? This will help them be more experienced when it comes to driving a full size motorcycle and will make the learning process much easier. You’ll want to consider your child’s overall attitude as well. If they tend to be a little more outgoing or fearless, then they may be more likely to drive more carelessly which would increase the risk of an accident. If they have a more responsible attitude towards life, then they are more likely to be a more responsible driver.
